Jayapura Onews,--Environmental
activists urged the government to immediately revise the regulations
relating to changes in the status of forests in Papua, which could
result in the destruction of forests in the province.
Reported

Greenpeace Southeast Asia forest, in Jakarta, Thursday (14/3),
associated with the Decree of the Minister of Forestry Decree number
458, among others, allow forest area of 376,385 hectares and not the
non- forest.
"We
ask the Minister of Forestry and the President to revise not repeal
Decree 458 because of the position of the protected forest area was
irreplaceable. Meaning, Papua will lose its forest areas. [Should] we
can learn a lot from the destruction of forests in Sumatra and
Kalimantan," said Teguh.
Kiki
Taufik, a specialist in GIS (Geographic Information System) of
Greenpeace Southeast Asia, explains that issued the decree meant Papuans
lost about 800 thousand hectares of their forest areas.
Analysis
conducted by Greenpeace based interpretation of the SK 458, primary
forest area of 376 thousand hectares will be converted into not
protected, which means it could potentially be a productive forest areas
or areas other uses (APL).
Further,
there are 392 thousand hectares are changing the function of protection
and conservation of forests reduced to production.
"In
other words, almost 800 thousand hectares of forest in Papua
potentially deforestation if the moratorium is over," said Kiki added
commitments in Indonesia forest moratorium will expire in May.
Kiki added that the decree was actually signed on August 15, 2012 ago, but no public attention. "We
are a little late (know), just realized when there is a moratorium on
the third revision of the map where the primary forest in Papua has
changed its function," he explained. "After analysis, SK is fundamental and directly to the change in its map revision."(tw)
